Float Level Testing

The float level cannot be tested 100% using this method, however, it can reveal a stuck float or a large incorrect float level - which will let you know which carb has the problem.

This testing can be done with the carbs on the bike on the centerstand.

Materials needed:

• Clear tubing that fits the drain nipple of the carb's float bowls
• Method to short the fuel pump relay/fuel pump or alternate fuel source

Process:

• Hook clear tubing up to the drain nipple on the carb. Hold the open end of the tube up against the carb.
• Now unscrew the float bowl drain screw.
• Short the fuel pump relay/fuel pump or hook up your alternative fuel source.
• The fuel pump should stop pumping as the float needle shuts off the fuel source.
  1. If the fuel pump doesn't shut off and the gas level doesn't rise, then another carb's float needle is not sealing or you have a gas leak.
• The fuel level in the tubing should stop where the float bowl meets the carb body.
  1. If the fuel level continues to rise in the tubing, it means that carb's float needle is not sealing.
