Restoring

• You can temporarily soften the boots by boiling them in water or heating them with a heat gun immediately before installation.
• You can create a mixture of 30% wintergreen oil (methyl salicylate) and 70% xylene. These are the same ingredients and proportions for the commercial product Rubber Renue according to the MSDS sheets.
  • Wintergreen oil is analgesic and liniment for aching muscles and found in most drugstores, pharmacies, health food stores and co-ops.
  • Xylene is available at most home supply, hardware, paint and marine stores.
  • Gently heat with a heat gun for 30 seconds and drop them into mason jars with solution for 12 hours at room temperature. Careful about leaving them in too long as them may swell up.
• You can also create a mixture of 2 oz. wintergreen oil and 1/2-3/4 gallon of water.
  • Put a screen in the bottom so the boots don't touch the pan, and heat them to near boiling (when those little bubbles start forming on the boots) for about 30 minutes.
  • Be sure to do this outside with a pan you're not planning on using again.

Replacement

The V65 '83 - '84 OEM boots are thicker and also have larger clamps than the thinner '85-'86 boots - which have smaller clamps

Replacement Alternative

V65 (36mm Carbs)

• Napa "gas filler neck hose" part # NBH 1030 (1.5" ID). Nice pliable snug fit, and obviously gas resistant. $17 and is long enough for 12 boots if you cut carefully.
  • May need to replace stock hose clamps with SS hose clamps or the larger '83-'84 boot clamps.
  • It has been reported that OEM clamps will work if you use longer bolts.
• Silicon tube, cut to fit (A bandsaw works best)

V45 (32mm Carbs)

• McMaster-Carr part #: 5282K63 or 56315K35 (1.25" ID) may work. Must order 5 feet - 'bout $35.
